Long Distance Caregivers Rely on Home Care Nurses

Keet is a home helper in Manhattan, NY for Lo, an 81-year-old woman with Alzheimer's disease. Here they are just goofing off in a hospital that Lo is recovering from a mini stroke. Lo was complaining about being bored in bed so they switched places.

Americans are aging quickly, and that means there is a great need for elder services. According to a recent estimate by The National Alliance for Caregiving and the AARP, the number of Americans providing home care to an individual in need has surpassed 65 million.

Generally speaking, home helpers live fairly close to the person to whom they are providing care, out of basic necessity. For example, if one sibling lives closer to an ailing parent than the others, then it’s likely that the responsibility for providing in-home care will rest on his or her shoulders.

However, for a whopping seven million Americans, the commute to the home in which they provide care takes longer than an hour. These findings, reported by The National Institute on Aging, shed light on what is an increasing problem in companion care.

In situations of long distance between caregiver and patient, it is recommended that there be as much communication as possible, be it by telephone or a webcam. This will enable family members to detect problems as they are developing, before it becomes too late to treat effectively.

Another piece of advice offered in such situations is to enlist the support of someone who lives closer to your patient, whether it be a friend or a neighbor. Have them check up on your loved one periodically, simply to ensure that everything is running smoothly.

The best support, though, often comes in the form of home care agencies who can provide aides to stay with your loved one. Often considerably cheaper than a nursing home or other out-of-house alternatives, home care nurses can provide first-rate care at inexpensive prices.

For many caregivers struggling with the long commute, home care agencies have become the preferred option. It enables long distance caregivers to stay where they are, while ensuring that their loved ones have the care and attention that they deserve.

  1. It's not uncommon for us to see families who are, at first, apprehensive about hiring an in-home caregiver. This is understandable - you don't know the person and you're trusting them to care for someone that means the world to you. But they often find that the professional caregiver becomes a very close friend, and allows the family members to really enjoy their time with their aging loved ones, instead of stressing about their daily care. All cases are different, but in home care definitely deserves examination for most cases.

    Great article. Thank you.

  4. It is always nice to have someone you know and trust be able to provide care for an elderly parent who can't be on their own all the time. But that is not always possible and makes a home care agency an important option. I think the key in that situation is to make sure you interview and spend time with the potential caregiver both alone and then with the person being cared for to make sure everyone feels comfortable and confident before hiring them. Then it always a good idea to re-evaluate on a regular basis for accountability.

  5. Is there a certain company you would recommend for home health care in Brockton MA? I need to hire someone to help me out in taking care of my mother but I have no idea where to start. None of my friends have had to deal with this yet, either.

  7. Thank you for your article! My parents are looking to get my grandma home care since she doesn't want to go to a nursing home and she lives a couple states away. It's comforting to know that if we hire a good home helper she will be taken care of!

  8. My father loves his house, and would prefer to stay there during his last few years of life. I lack the skills necessary to take care of him, and would love to get him in a program like this. It would be really nice to have someone visit him everyday and keep him company, as well as check his vitals. http://www.alliancehome-careservices.com

  9. I am looking for Home care services to assist my mother. We would like to keep her in her house if possible instead of moving her to a assisted living center. That way she can live close to her grandchildren.

  14. My grandpa relies heavily on in home care. He is not able to go to the hospital, so he is very happy for the people who come to him. Me and my family are not able to visit him often because of our schedules, so we are happy for the home care as well!

  15. We do have quite an increase in the senior population, thanks to the baby boomers. I agree that this is what has brought the senior home care into a more important role. Taking care of our older relatives is important, but sometimes we don't have the means nor the ability to stay and give them the constant care they need. This is why it's great that there are quality services offered to help them.

  16. For those that are elderly, they need a little extra care than us younger folk. Their bodies are more frail and injuries take longer to heal. For my grandma, I would want to get the best care for her. Since she is living on her own now, I think I'll look into getting a home care provider for her. http://www.virginiahcs.com/
