AARP Says: Get Involved In Redistricting
Once in a decade chance to change voting district lines.

Over the last 10 years, guess what percentage of incumbent Florida legislators have won re-election: 98 percent.

Here’s one reason why: Long before the election takes place, politicians have arranged voting-district lines so they have a big political edge.

Think of it this way – politicians are choosing their voters, rather than the voters choosing their elected leaders.

Now you have a once-in-a-decade chance to change all that. This summer, Florida legislators are holding public hearings statewide to gather public input on “redistricting,” the once-in-10-years process of reshaping voting districts. Visit the upcoming events calendar at
http://www.aarp.org/states/fl/, at left, for more information about a hearing near you.

June 20, 2011 (Monday) Tallahassee - 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. - 412 Knott Building, Capitol Complex (Online RSVP)

June 21, 2011 (Tuesday)
Pensacola - 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. CST - WSRE-TV Amos Studio
Fort Walton Beach - 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. CST - Fort Walton Beach High School
June 22, 2011 (Wednesday)Panama City - 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. CST - Gulf Coast Community College

If you don’t take part, politicians will draw the lines to suit themselves, locking in a political advantage in elections for years to come.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Please plan to attend a public hearing this summer and urge legislators to provide draft redistricting plans for members of the public to respond to.

Please also go to go to
www.floridaredistricting.org . to use MyDistrictBuilder.com, the same software used by legislators and staff to create your own voting-district map.

You can submit your map to the Legislature to be considered in redistricting.

Remember, go to
www.floridaredistricting.org to learn more or to use the official MyDistrictBuilder software. Or call AARP Florida at 1-866-595-7678 or e-mail us at FLAARP@aarp.org to learn how to get involved.

You have a once-in-a-decade chance to make a difference for fair elections.

Take action now to ensure fair elections in Florida!
